The Democratic Party (Myanmar), the second-largest pro-democracy party in Rangoon, complained about lack of proper procedures at polling stations.

“The ballot boxes were neither sealed nor tied with ropes. Half of the 10 polling staff were out for lunch in Pathein Nyunt Ward in Mingalar Tuangnyunt Township in Rangoon. We are extremely disappointed,” said Hla Myint, the spokesman for the Democratic Party (Myanmar).

Voters who decided to go to the polling stations were faced with fraud and intimidation in different parts of the country, according to major opposition parties.

“The polling station officials themselves ticked the “Lion” symbol of the junta's party on behalf of the voters,” said 32-year-old Khin Maung Than, a candidate for the National Democratic Force (NDF), referring to the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

USDP Posters Violate Electoral Laws
BOTAHTAUNG, Rangoon—Three posters for the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party are placed near the gate of polling station No. 22 in Botahtaung Township, say local voters. They believe that the posters violate the electoral law which says any type of campaign publicity including posters are prohibited within 500 yards (457.2 meters) of polling stations.

AMRDP Stops Illegal USDP Campaigning
MON STATE—Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) members were campaigning in breach of the election law this morning and were telling people to vote for the USDP until representatives from the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMRDP) stopped them at a polling station in Kawkalay village, Mudon township, according to the AMRDP.

MON STATE—Village Peace and Development Councils (VPDC) in Moulmein and Mudon townships did not give voting slips on Saturday to people who would not vote for the USDP, said leaders of the All Mon Regions Democracy Party.

NAYPYIDAW—Ballot boxes in Naypyidaw, the capital of Burma, are not sealed and locked and the covers of the plastic boxes are only secured with plastic tape, said witnesses. It is believed that the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party will win most of the constituencies in the capital.

Non-USDP Voters Refused Ballots

THANPYUZAYAT, Mon State — Polling station officers in Kyaung Paing, a village in Thanpyuzayat Township, Mon State, have refused to sign ballot papers to voters they suspect of not being USDP supporters, according to several local sources. The voters are nonetheless issued ballots and allowed to vote, however unsigned ballots will most likely be rendered “spoilt ballots” during vote-counting.

Invalid ballots at Thilawar Naval Base
RANGOON—Advanced votes were collected from more than 400 people at Thilawar Naval Base but when checked all were found to be invalid ballots, a source told The Irrawaddy. “According to the election law, the ballots must be counted on Sunday evening. With an armed forces of up to half a million men and women, winning the military vote is crucial in a Burmese election. Still, it appears the military regime does not even trust its own soldiers as it has ordered all its personnel and their families to cast advance votes in favor of the pro-junta Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).
